 Global Online Academy is a nonprofit organization that reimagines learning to empower students and educators to thrive in a globally networked society.

 

Do you want to become a more effective online learner? As schools responded to the pandemic by shifting learning online, you had to navigate new learning environments, routines, support, ways to collaborate, and mechanisms to demonstrate your learning.

This course is appropriate for students in grades 9-12. The personalized nature of this course makes it perfect for any learner context including a class, a grade level, study skills or advisory program. While the design of this course encourages teachers to bring a group of students and integrate course topics into their learning environment, individual students are also welcomed to enroll.

There is a middle school version of this course which will cover the same key skills in a much leaner online format which asks affiliated teachers to be more actively engaged in the delivery of the learning experience.

Understanding the Impact of Deepfake Videos

The strange reality of deepfake media 

Imagine not being able to trust what you see or hear when you watch a video online. Deepfakes are manipulated media—video or audio—where a person has been replaced with someone else's likeness and made to appear as if they said or did something that never happened. Deepfake videos use artificial intelligence and can appear very convincing, even to a trained eye. When used to mislead audiences, deepfake videos can be disastrous.However, they can have useful benefits too—like offering AI-assisted video reshoots. 

 

In this introductory course, senior staff instructor Ashley Kennedy offers a useful introduction to the dangers and benefits of deepfake videos. She also provides a high-level overview of deepfake technology and puts forward some tools to identify deepfake videos, as well as suggestions for what to do when you suspect or spot a deepfake video.

Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Home-school Classes

Calling all animal lovers in grades 2-5! This winter, FONZ will partner with Smithsonian Associates to offer home-school/after-school virtual adventures! Each five-week session will take students on an amazing learning journey that connects the animals of the Smithsonian's National Zoo to the other treasures of the Smithsonian through themes such as art, music and the natural sciences. 

Classes will be split into two grade-specific listings: one for children in grades 2 and 3, and one for children in grades 4 and 5. Students will access grade-specific content like STEM activities, movement games and challenges, and exclusive animal videos. Weekly live lessons will be broadcast from across the Smithsonian and feature grade-specific breakout sessions to build on weekly lessons

FONZ creates multigenerational learning opportunities for individuals, students, families, and friend groups of all backgrounds and ages. In the spirit of inspiring future conservationists, FONZ offers a myriad of exciting classes and camps for students from preschool through adult, on everything from "Friendly Frogs and Terrific Turtles" to a class on Zoo nutrition. FONZ collaborates across the Smithsonian, the Zoo, SCBI, and the entire community to create educational events and festivals and facilitate field trip lessons at the Zoo and educational outreach experiences at SCBI.
